Conversation About Non-Suicidal Self-Injury

This half day Mental Health First Aid Conversations about Non-suicidal Self injury ( sometimes referred to as self harm) course teaches any adult (18 years and over) how to identify, approach and support someone who is engaging in self-injury.

Learn the skills and knowledge to help someone talk about their self-injury, how to keep them safe and connect them to appropriate professional help.

Participants will also have the opportunity to practice these skills in a safe environment.

The term ‘non-suicidal selfinjury’ (NSSI) describes a behaviour where a person deliberately or purposefully hurts themselves. It is used to refer to self-injury that is not intended to result in death.

Participants learn to provide initial support until professional help is available or the crisis resolves. The course covers how to recognise and respond to non-suicidal self-injury, using interventions and supports to guide individuals towards professional help.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Recognise Signs: Identify the signs that someone may be engaging in non-suicidal self-injury.
  • Supportive Conversations: Learn how to have a supportive conversation with someone engaging in self-injury.
  • Evidence-Based Action Plan: Use a practical approach to initiate mental health first aid conversations.
  • Professional Resources: Understand the professional resources available for those engaging in self-injury.
  • Overcome Barriers: Learn about common barriers to seeking help and how to overcome them.
  • Suicide Risk Awareness: Recognise signs of and provide initial support to someone who may be at risk of suicide.
  • Reduce stigma: Understand that non-suicidal self-injury is not attention-seeking it requires care and support.
  • Self-Care Practices: Implement self-care practices as a Mental Health First Aider.

This course is recognised by Suicide Prevention Australia as a safe, high-quality, and effective suicide prevention program.
